20 Persons Sewage Treatment Unit

Ensure full compliance with international maritime pollution regulations using our SWCM series marine sewage treatment plant, a robust and reliable system designed for the effective treatment of sewage from vessels and offshore installations. Manufactured in accordance with the revised Annex IV of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution (MARPOL 73/78) , this device is an essential component of any ship’s marine pollution prevention equipment.

This shipboard sewage treatment system is specifically applicable to treat sewage, defined as human body wastes and wastes from toilets on vessels—commonly referred to as “black water.” It is designed to process this waste to meet the stringent effluent standards of IMO Resolution MEPC.159(55) , enacted on 13 October 2006. The convention (MARPOL 73/78) mandates that all Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) installed on board on or after 1 January 2010 must meet this resolution, making our SWCM series the compliant choice for newbuilds and retrofits.

Beyond its primary marine application, this versatile wastewater treatment system is also suitable for treating terrestrial sewage from land-based sources. The water quality after treatment can reach national reuse water quality requirements. Furthermore, it is applicable to treat galley and shower drainage—known as “grey water” —provided the grey water is adequately pretreated and a larger capacity model is selected to handle the increased load.

All units are available with certification from major classification societies, including CCS, GL, ABS, DNV, BV, RS, and others, ensuring global acceptance for your vessel.

Key Features & Benefits

  • MARPOL Annex IV Compliant: Designed and tested to meet the requirements of MARPOL 73/78 Annex IV and the stringent effluent limits of IMO Resolution MEPC.159(55) for overboard discharge.

  • Effective Black Water Treatment: Specifically engineered to treat “black water” (sewage from toilets), ensuring harmful pathogens and organic matter are removed before discharge.

  • Versatile Application: Suitable for use on ships, marine drilling platforms, and even for terrestrial sewage treatment, with the potential for water reuse.

  • Grey Water Capable: Can be configured to handle “grey water” (from galleys and showers) when pretreated and paired with an appropriately sized model.

  • Global Certification: Available with type-approval certificates from leading classification societies: CCS, GL, ABS, DNV, BV, RS, and more.

  • Robust Construction: Built to withstand the marine environment, with reliable components for long-term, low-maintenance operation.

  • Customizable Power Supply: Available for standard marine voltages, including AC 380V/50Hz/3Φ and AC 440V/60Hz/3Φ, or as per customer requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is the difference between MARPOL Annex IV and MEPC.159(55)?
MARPOL Annex IV is the international regulation that sets the overall requirements for preventing pollution by sewage from ships. It mandates that ships must have an approved Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) . MEPC.159(55) is a specific resolution that provides the detailed performance standards and test guidelines that STPs must meet to be compliant. In short, Annex IV is the “what” (you need a system), and MEPC.159(55) is the “how well” (the specific effluent quality standards the system must achieve).

2. What is the difference between “black water” and “grey water”?

  • Black Water: This refers to wastewater from toilets and urinals, containing human body wastes. It has a high concentration of organic matter and pathogens and is the primary target for marine sanitation devices.

  • Grey Water: This refers to wastewater from galleys (kitchens), showers, washbasins, and laundries. It contains soaps, detergents, food particles, and grease. Our SWCM series can treat grey water, but it typically requires pre-treatment (like a grease trap) and a larger capacity model due to the higher volume.

3. Is this device certified by classification societies?
Yes. We understand that marine equipment must be approved for use on classified vessels. Our SWCM series sewage treatment plants are available with type-approval certificates from all major classification societies, including CCS (China Classification Society), GL (Germanischer Lloyd), ABS (American Bureau of Shipping), DNV (Det Norske Veritas), BV (Bureau Veritas), and RS (Russian Maritime Register of Shipping) . Please specify your required certification when ordering.

4. Can this system be used for onshore or land-based applications?
Absolutely. While primarily designed for marine drilling platforms and ships, the SWCM series is also suitable for terrestrial sewage treatment. Its compact, self-contained design makes it ideal for remote construction sites, small communities, resorts, or industrial facilities where space is limited. The treated water quality can meet national standards for reuse in applications like irrigation or industrial cooling.

5. What does the “treated load” (Average vs. Pinnacle/Peak) mean?

  • Average Load (1540 L/day): This is the expected total volume of sewage the system can treat over a 24-hour period under normal operating conditions, based on the rated number of persons (20 people).

  • Pinnacle/Peak Load (193 L/hour): This is the maximum hourly flow rate the system can handle without being overwhelmed. Sewage generation is not constant; it peaks during meal times and morning routines. The system is designed to handle these short-term peak flows while still maintaining effective treatment.

6. What are the dimensions and weight, and will it fit in my engine room?
The physical size is an important consideration for installation. The SWCM-20 model has a footprint of 5950mm in length, 2400mm in width, and 2570mm in height. The dry weight is 1000kg, and the operational (wet) weight is 2640kg. We recommend carefully checking your available engine room or dedicated space against these dimensions. We offer other models in the SWCM series with different capacities and footprints; please contact us for detailed drawings and specifications.
