1. Material Composition:

   • Primary tube: Cast iron (tapered forward end for removal ease)

   • Flanged forward end with doubler plate connection to bulkhead

   • Bearing options: Lignum Vitae, Cutlass rubber, or engineered plastics (e.g., Cresylic resin-bonded WA80H)

2. Bearing Configuration:

   • Traditional wood bearings: Dovetailed into brass bush with end-grain machining

   • Modern alternatives:

     • Rubber composition (cutlass type)

     • High-performance plastics (boundary-lubrication tolerant)

3. Lubrication Systems:

   • Water Lubrication:

     • Minimum bearing length = 4×shaft diameter

     • Forced circulation required for bearings >380mm

     • Flow monitoring mandatory

   • Oil Lubrication:

     • Sealed system with contamination safeguards
