How to Use Marine Retro-Reflective Tape (SOLAS-Compliant)

1. Purpose & Applications

Marine retro-reflective tape enhances visibility in low-light conditions, critical for:

  • Life-saving equipment: Lifeboats, life rafts, life jackets, and immersion suits.
  • Emergency exits: Marking escape routes on ships.
  • Hazardous areas: Highlighting steps, edges, or obstacles on decks.

2. Installation Requirements (IMO A.658(16) Compliance)

  • Placement:
    • Lifeboats: Apply to sides, top edges, and bottom (if non-self-righting). Minimum 150 cm² per section, spaced 80 cm apart.
    • Life rafts: Wrap around the canopy and add a cross-shaped mark (half the raft’s diameter) on the underside.
    • Lifebuoys: Four 5 cm-wide bands evenly spaced around the circumference.
    • Life jackets/Immersion suits: Total reflective area ≥400 cm², positioned for visibility from all angles.
  • Material: Use SOLAS-approved tape (e.g., Type I for indoor/short-term exposure, Type II for outdoor/long-term durability).

3. Step-by-Step Application

  1. Surface Prep: Clean thoroughly to remove oil, dust, or moisture. Dry completely.
  2. Cutting: Measure and cut tape to size using sharp scissors or a knife.
  3. Application: Peel off the backing and press firmly, avoiding bubbles. For curved surfaces (e.g., lifebuoys), work slowly to maintain adhesion.
  4. Curing: Allow 12+ hours for full bonding before exposure to water or movement.

4. Key Precautions

  • Avoid static: Ground the tape during application in flammable environments.
  • Prevent contamination: Store unused tape in a clean, dry place.
  • Regular inspection: Check for peeling, fading, or damage. Replace immediately if compromised.
  • Temperature: Apply in temperatures >15°C for optimal adhesion.
  • Compatibility: Use only SOLAS-certified tape (e.g., “DM1101A” for self-adhesive, “DM1101B” for sew-on).

5. Maintenance & Replacement

  • Cleaning: Wipe gently with mild soap and water; avoid abrasive materials.
  • Lifespan: Replace every 3–5 years (or per manufacturer guidelines) due to UV degradation.

By following these guidelines, marine operators ensure compliance with SOLAS regulations and maximize safety during emergencies.
