However, for optimal engagement with the chain gypsy, it is important that the anchor line approaches within a specific angle, typically not exceeding 5 degrees above or below the center line of the gypsy.

Our marine electric capstans are available with rated pulls ranging from 3 to 20 tonnes, making them suitable for a wide variety of vessel sizes and loads. Designed for seamless integration into your deck construction, the unit includes a foundation pipe piece that allows for easy installation and connection of the motor below deck. This keeps the deck layout clean and protects the drive system from the elements.

The electric anchor capstan can be operated using either a Direct-On-Line (DOL) control for simple start/stop functionality, or a frequency converter for precise variable speed control, allowing the operator to match the hauling speed to the specific operational requirements.

The Critical Role of Gypsy Design

At the heart of an effective anchor windlass or capstan is the gypsy. This is the specialized component of the ship capstan designed to securely engage and handle the anchor chain. Our gypsies are meticulously engineered to accommodate anchor chains within a specific range, typically from 16mm to 60mm in diameter.

The design of the gypsy is crucial for safe operation:

Secure Grip: It ensures a positive, non-slip grip on the anchor chain, allowing for controlled movement during both lifting (heaving) and lowering (veering) operations.
Proper Alignment: The gypsy’s pockets are shaped to maintain correct chain alignment and tension, preventing the chain from jumping, jamming, or causing damage.
Smooth Operation: The optimized shape and precision casting facilitate smooth engagement and disengagement of the chain links, reducing wear on both the chain and the gypsy.
