Ballast Water Management Plant
The worldwide shipping sector, which accounts for the movement of more than 80% of the planet’s merchandise, is estimated to transfer between 3 and 5 billion tonnes of ballast water across international borders annually. Although ballast water is indispensable for maintaining vessel stability and ensuring safe navigation, it presents substantial ecological, economic, and public health hazards. This is due to the unintentional transfer of invasive aquatic organisms. These organisms are often tiny enough to slip through ballast water intake ports and pumps. When discharged into non-native habitats, they can wreak irreversible harm on local ecosystems and biodiversity.
In reaction to this pressing issue, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has formulated the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments. This convention mandates that vessels adhere to stringent ballast water treatment criteria, thereby fueling the need for dependable and certified Ballast Water Management Systems (BWMS).
Compliance Requirements under the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention
In line with IMO regulations, all international ships are obligated to implement a ballast water management plan that satisfies specific treatment benchmarks. Ships are required to keep a ballast water record book and possess an international ballast water management certificate. While new ships must integrate compliant systems from the outset, existing vessels must adopt approved ballast water treatment solutions by their designated renewal survey deadline. Installing an onboard BWMS has thus become an essential move towards achieving global compliance.
Core Components of Our Cutting-Edge Ballast Water Management Plant
1. Intelligent Control Module
Our fully automated Control Module guarantees smooth operation through real-time sensor monitoring, alarm handling, and system diagnostics. It offers constant feedback on the operational status, facilitating efficient and compliant ballast water treatment. This intelligent control system is designed to optimize the performance of the entire ballast water management process, ensuring that every step is carried out precisely and in accordance with regulations. It can detect any anomalies in the system immediately and trigger appropriate alarms, allowing for quick troubleshooting and minimizing downtime.
2. High-Performance Automatic Filter
The system incorporates a self-cleaning, auto-backwashing filter with a 50μm precision filtration level. This unit efficiently eliminates larger organisms and sediments, preventing their entry into ballast tanks and reducing the load on downstream treatment processes. The self-cleaning feature of the filter is a significant advantage as it eliminates the need for manual cleaning, saving time and labor costs. The auto-backwashing mechanism ensures that the filter remains clean and effective at all times, providing consistent filtration performance throughout the ballast water treatment cycle.
3. Electrocatalysis-Ultrasound Treatment (EUT) Module
At the heart of our BWMS lies the EUT module, which can handle a flow rate of 100–3000 m³/h per unit. Leveraging advanced electrocatalysis technology, it generates hydroxyl radicals that eradicate microorganisms within nanoseconds. Integrated ultrasound technology continuously cleans the electrocatalytic surfaces, guaranteeing sustained treatment effectiveness and extending the system’s lifespan. The electrocatalysis process is highly efficient in destroying a wide range of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and algae, ensuring that the ballast water meets the strict discharge standards. The ultrasound technology not only cleans the electrocatalytic surfaces but also enhances the overall treatment process by promoting better mixing and mass transfer, further improving the system’s performance.
