The Critical Need for Ballast Water Management: Addressing a Global Environmental Threat

The global shipping industry, responsible for transporting over 80% of the world’s goods, transfers an estimated 3 to 5 billion tonnes of ballast water internationally each year. While ballast water is essential for vessel stability and safe operations, it poses significant ecological, economic, and public health risks due to the unintended transfer of invasive aquatic species. These organisms—often small enough to pass through ballast water intake ports and pumps. It can cause irreversible damage to local ecosystems and biodiversity when released into non-native environments.

In response, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) established the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments. This convention requires vessels to comply with strict ballast water treatment standards, driving demand for reliable and certified Ballast Water Management Plant (BWMT).

IMO Ballast Water Management Convention Compliance Requirements

According to IMO regulations, all international ships must implement a ballast water management plan that meets specific treatment standards. Vessels are required to maintain a ballast water record book and carry an international ballast water management certificate. While newer ships must incorporate compliant systems from the start, existing vessels must adopt approved ballast water treatment solutions by their specified renewal survey date. Installing an onboard BWMS is now a necessary step toward global compliance.

Key Components of Our Advanced Ballast Water Treatment System

1. Intelligent Control Unit
Our fully automated Control Unit ensures seamless operation through real-time sensor monitoring, alarm management, and system diagnostics. It provides continuous feedback on operational status, enabling efficient and compliant ballast water treatment.

2. High-Efficiency Automatic Filter
The system includes a self-cleaning, auto-backwashing filter with 50μm precision filtration. This unit effectively removes larger organisms and sediments, preventing them from entering ballast tanks and reducing downstream treatment load.

3. Electrocatalysis-Ultrasound Treatment (EUT) Unit
At the core of our BWMS is the EUT module, capable of treating 100–3000 m³/h per unit. Using advanced electrocatalysis, it generates hydroxyl radicals that eliminate microorganisms within nanoseconds. Integrated ultrasound technology continuously cleans the electrocatalytic surfaces, ensuring sustained treatment efficacy and system longevity.
