Aluminum Gangway Ladders
An aluminum shore gangway is an essential piece of marine access equipment, providing a safe and stable walkway between a dock (quay) and a moored vessel. Designed to facilitate the passage of crew, passengers, and light cargo, these narrow platforms are critical for safe boarding operations in ports, harbors, and shipyards.
Our aluminum shore gangways are manufactured from a specialized high-strength aluminum alloy, offering a unique combination of exceptional durability and lightweight construction. Unlike steel equivalents, aluminum does not rust, resulting in a product that is resistant to corrosion, requires virtually no maintenance costs, and is easier for crew to handle and deploy.
All our gangways for seagoing vessels are designed and tested to comply with ISO7061 (Shipbuilding – Shore gangways for seagoing vessels), ensuring they meet the international standards for safety, load-bearing capacity, and dimensional requirements. We offer a comprehensive range of styles to suit various dock heights, vessel freeboards, and operational needs, including detachable ladders, truss designs, and folding models. Each unit can be supplied with certification from any major IACS classification society, guaranteeing acceptance for international voyages.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. What is the difference between a shore gangway and an accommodation ladder?
While both are used for access, they are typically mounted differently.
-
A Shore Gangway is usually a portable walkway that connects the ship’s deck railing to the dock. It is often stowed horizontally on the ship and deployed over the side. It is covered by ISO7061.
-
An Accommodation Ladder is a more permanent fixture on the side of the ship, often consisting of a lower platform and an upper platform with a ladder section that angles inwards. It is covered by ISO5488. We supply both types.
2. Why is aluminum preferred over steel for shore gangways?
Aluminum offers several critical advantages for gangways:
-
Weight: Aluminum is approximately one-third the weight of steel. This makes the gangway significantly easier for crew members to handle, swing out, and position without heavy deck cranes.
-
Maintenance: Aluminum is naturally corrosion-resistant and does not rust. Unlike steel, it does not require regular chipping, painting, and anti-rust treatments, leading to lower maintenance costs over its lifetime.
-
Workability: It is easier to fabricate into complex shapes like trusses.
3. What is ISO7061 and why is it important?
ISO7061 is the International Standard titled “Shipbuilding – Shore gangways for seagoing vessels.” It specifies the requirements for design, materials, construction, safety, and testing of shore gangways. Compliance with ISO7061 ensures that the gangway has been designed to safely handle the expected loads (static and dynamic), that the handrails are the correct height, and that it is safe for international seafarers to use. It is often a requirement for classification society approval.
4. Can you provide classification society certification (e.g., ABS, DNV) for these gangways?
Yes, absolutely. We understand that marine equipment often requires third-party verification for insurance and flag state compliance. We can supply our aluminum shore gangways with official certification from any major IACS member, including ABS (American Bureau of Shipping), BV (Bureau Veritas), CCS (China Classification Society), DNV GL, LR (Lloyd’s Register), NK (Nippon Kaiji Kyokai), RINA, KR (Korean Register), and RS (Russian Maritime Register) . Please specify your requirements when ordering.
5. What is the difference between Type A and Type B gangways?
-
Type A (All-in-one) is a single, rigid structure. It is simple, strong, and ideal for vessels where the stowage area can accommodate its full length.
-
Type B (Detachable) is designed to be taken apart into two or more sections (as shown in the table with section length “l”). This modular design is beneficial for smaller vessels or where storage space is limited, as the sections can be stacked or stored separately.
